What is kept
Text, headings, bold and italic text, lists, tables and pictures are kept. Exact fonts, page margins, headers, footers and text boxes from the original Word layout may look different, because the conversion happens in your browser instead of in Microsoft Word.
Need an exact copy of the layout?
In Microsoft Word, choose File → Save As → PDF. In Google Docs, choose File → Download → PDF document. Both keep your layout exactly.
